About
The Green Sun is a multifaceted project that joins artists and designers together with practitioners from the fields of energy democracy, activism, and the environmental humanities to expand systems of thought and collectively build strategies for energy futures. We began as a way to consider the origins of solar technology, its technical & economic limits, its viability within local communities, and its narrative potential. Our project asks what it takes to make a world believable outside our own and what role can artists play in envisioning a healthy, more equitable world. Since 2019, The Green Sun has organized a series of exhibitions and programs focusing on themes of technology, ecology, energy histories, community exchange, narrative strategies, and world building. While our project advocates for renewable energy and the reduction and elimination of fossil fuels, we are wary of the capitalist will to impoverish or pollute the communities where parts for renewable energy are extracted and produced. By connecting practitioners in business, government, academia, and the arts with our community we are able to translate the energy grid and energy production into something that is visible and relatable to people’s daily lives. We introduce critical, pragmatic, and speculative strategies for energy futures through interviews, participatory workshops, film screenings, panel discussions, exhibitions, and an open call for ideas that reimagine energy in our lives. The Green Sun is inspired by the principles of “deep local” coined by permaculturist Tom Ward which calls for the slow development of culture towards ecological evolution.
